Gabe Fineman

Recording Secretary
Background
Gabe is a 20-plus-year resident of Cleveland Park noted for writing up the ANC meeting for years and for traffic calming efforts. He plans to provide similar notes in addition to the official minutes. Gabe started the CPCA Listserv to provide communications between the members. He is the lawyer for a manufacturer of software for nonprofit associations.

VISION:
I support the views stated in the platform of the Reform Slate.  These include efforts to modernize communications, engage the broader community and provide greater transparency into the operation of the CPCA.  To me, the key is to change the culture of the CPCA from passive members that just pay dues to active participants.

STATEMENT OF POSITION:
As Recording Secretary I will enhance the communication with the members in the following ways:
  • In addition to the formal minutes, I will also provide informal notes about each monthly meeting to give more of the feel of what went on. This is something that I did for years for ANC meetings and for some of the Giant meetings.
  • I will record the meetings and put them on the web so that members can download and play these recordings to find out exactly what happened at the ones that they missed. Since most members are unable to attend these monthly meetings in person, this will give them virtual attendance.
BIOGRAPHY:
I have been a resident of Cleveland Park for more than twenty years. Before 1995 I specialized in banking and computer law. Since 1995 I have been General Counsel for Advanced Solutions International, in Alexandria, that makes iMIS software to operate associations and charities.
A native of Philadelphia, and a graduate of Temple University (yes, he met Bill Crosby there), he spent ten years in Chicago before moving to Washington. He has four grown children and three grandchildren. His wife, Ellen Fredel, is an ERISA attorney who practices from the house on Porter Street.

COMMUNITY ACTIVIISM:
I am active on the listservs and  was active in traffic calming on Porter street (when it was rebuilt) and worked to get the stop signs and traffic light that try to keep traffic from exceeding the speed limit.
I also operate indexing services (www.list-search.com) for a number of community listservs (much better than the Yahoo search) although I stopped that service for the Cleveland-Park listserv in 2006 at the request of the owners. I also host the Historic Washington web site and provide technical support for it. Of course, these services are provided for free.
Gabe started the CPCA Listserv that is now sponsored by the Association. He was also active in the membership recruiting drive.
