Why is Feedback so Central to our Platform?
We think that the
basic fault of the current leadership is that it has become ingrown. A
few people do all of the work and they hold key meetings in living
rooms. When they want expanded input, they invite friends who already
agree with their point of view. That is why they were so out of touch
with their membership about Giant and incredibly out of touch when they
thought it was a good idea to cancel the elections.
So, how should the executive board keep in touch with the membership?
We
think it is by establishing a good means of communications through the
successful CPCA Listserv. That allows two way communication and the
opportunity for everyone to weigh in.
However, that is not enough. Most people on listservs are 'lurkers' who
read but rarely post any messages. A Listserv with 400 people
saying "I Agree" would flood everyone's mailbox. So, in addition
to the Listserv, we intend to have both polls and surveys.
A poll is a single question with a fixed list of answers. It is
good for questions such as 'Should we support the application of the
new hardware store to obtain a liquor license?' or 'Do you shop
outside Cleveland Park because of a lack of parking? Never, once a
month, once a week, twice a week, three or more times a week'
A survey may ask a series of these same poll like questions, but
usually also has spaces where you can write in your own answer to open
ended questions such as "What should the CPCA do about it?" or "What
position should the CPCA take?"
We want to change the culture of the CPCA so that people will expect
that it is their responsibility to provide feed back and so that the
elected
officers will be expected to solicit and consider feedback.
